Edible Plant and Tasty Shoot Walks

Well, spring has arrived, and with it, a flurry of green, extending upwards towards the heavens. Here at the Kinoshita Isami Lab, we were able to enjoy two fun events incorporating learning about our surrounding wild greenery, as well as...cooking and EATING IT! Edible plants are important to biodiversity as well as people, but on these days, we mainly learned about how we as a community can enjoy the plants around us more according to Japanese Tradition. Mr. Nagareo, our guide, who also works as a volunteer guide at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, took a number of us and members of other labs (such as the Entomology and Fruit Science Labs), as well as some members of the community, around the campus, and even on a trip to the Edo River! On the first round, which was just around campus, we were introduced to a whopping 22 species of edible wild plants! On the second trip, we went all the way to the river, where we collected shoots from a huge stand of Goji Berry Bushes, incorporated into the eight-plant count for that day. We made a lot of tempura with cooks specifically called for the occasion by our partner in the debauchery, Mr. Enomoto, a food and community activist in the area, who really knows how to make a party! Finally as we enjoyed our meals, Mr. Nagareo shared traditional Japanese songs containing at least one of the plants we collected on that day. They were lovely events... Looking forward to next spring! Event 1 Study Plants: 1 philadelphia fleabane, 2 Japanese mugwort, 3 Dandelion, 4 winter heliotrope, 5 giant chickweed, 6 common sowthistle, 7 Strawberry Saxifrage, 8 Orange Daylily, 9 Fishmint (Dokudami), 10 Japanese Raspberry, 11 Chinese Desert-Thorn or Goji Berry Bush, 12 Japanese Elderberry, 13 Ashitaba, 14 Japanese Persimmon, 15 Mulberry, 16 Japanese Butterbur, 17 Aucuba or Japanese Laurel, 18 Yomena... and a few more! On the other trip, we collected these plants and others, though we saw many other edibles along the way: Japanese Mulberry, Japanese Laurel, Angelica Tree, Goji Berry Bush. It was a fascinating and delicious endeavor.
